Transform Your HDB Toilet Into A 5-Star Hotel Bathroom with These 5 Tips!

Share

Did you know that on average, people use their toilet a whopping 2,500 times a year? Despite spending so much time in it, we tend to overlook our HDB toilet designs and pay more attention to other rooms. So why not spice things up? Your toilet needn’t be boring or ‘shitty’ (pun intended).

Imagine a typical hotel bathroom with exquisitely backlit mirrors, rose-gold taps, and a modern marble interior to boot. The possibilities are endless when it comes to toilet designs, and sometimes, all you need is a little inspiration.

To kick things off, let’s explore how you too, can have your very own 5-Star hotel bathroom with these 5 tips!

1. Organise Your Toilet Space

As the saying goes, less is more. A tidy bathroom promotes a more relaxing and inviting environment. In fact, decluttering your toilet is one of the easiest and cheapest ways of elevating the design of your HDB toilet. Notice how hotels and spas organise their bathroom essentials and apply this same concept.

Only keep essential items that you need. Try to minimise the amount of products on your counters by always disposing of any expired or unused items. If you still have way too many of them, perhaps consider multi-functional furniture that helps to add additional storage space without cluttering the area.

Multi-functional furniture like sinks and mirrors can double down as storage spaces. For example, some overhead cabinets have mirrors installed on their doors, allowing them to hide discreetly. If you are trying to maximise your toilet’s space while keeping it organised, these cabinets are worth checking out. Another smart way to declutter is to transfer your products’ contents into standardised, plain containers or bottles. This is especially useful if your products are of different colours and sizes. Plus, these containers can also be design elements that complement your toilet’s theme!

2. Freshen Up Your Bathroom

We often focus so much on our sense of sight we forget about our sense of smell. A toilet should look and smell good. Luckily, there are many ways to freshen up your bathroom experience. Considering that pleasant scents have been found to positively impact our mood and well-being, try to utilise them!

Play around with different aromas and air fresheners and see what works best. When selecting an air freshener, consider your personal preferences and lifestyle needs. We suggest selecting lighter scents for your toilet since its space is limited.

If you’re looking for a convenient and accessible option, look for aerosols or gels. Aerosols allow you to quickly add bursts of fragrance whenever required. Meanwhile, gels are a convenient set-and-forget option albeit notably weaker results. However, while both aerosols and gels run out fairly quickly, they can be easily found near your HDB in shopping malls or minimarts so replacing them shouldn’t be a hassle.

If you’re looking for something longer lasting and more aesthetically pleasing for your HDB toilet, go for scented candles and diffusers. Capable of continuously emitting room-filling fragrances, they come in a wide selection of scents, making it likely that you’ll find something that matches your taste. Do keep in mind however, that while diffusers are another set-and-forget option, candles require a lot more supervision. Both options may also be toxic to pets, so remember to do your research!

3. Add A Touch of Greenery

You’ve heard about the garden city but what about a garden toilet? Bringing plants into your bathroom has a variety of benefits. Whether you’re going for a Scandinavian, Minimalistic, or Modern Luxury look, plants are highly versatile in interior design. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, they’re also good for your emotional wellbeing. Studies have revealed that just spending a few minutes in their presence evokes satisfaction and tranquillity. In fact, looking after plants helps relieve stress and boosts your energy.

When considering your toilet’s design, choose a suitable spot for potential houseplants. Ideally, you want to plan ahead to avoid shoehorning a plant into your bathroom, as they might not fit its theme or size.

Don’t forget that they’re also living things! Consider the amount of natural light and humidity in your bathroom to identify suitable plant species. If you have more vertical space, consider plants like the ‘snake plant’ that grows upwards. If there’s limited natural light, plants that thrive in low-light conditions such as the ‘Chinese Evergreen’ may be befitting.

4. Upgrade Your Bathroom Accessories

When it comes to bathroom designs, don’t overlook the significance of seemingly small elements. Smaller fixtures and fittings like your wall hook and towel bar can have a large impact, with the ability to elevate and harmonise your bathroom’s theme. From countertop basins to vanity mirrors, there are various accessories that can add style to your bathroom. Take rain shower heads for instance, they complement modern luxury interiors well.

Fixtures and fittings can be used as statement pieces that add an additional wow! factor to your toilet design. For instance, if you’re aiming for a clean white aesthetic, opting for faucets or shower baskets in a contrasting colour, say dusky black or brushed gold, can work wonders. The key here is to visually separate these elements from your bathroom’s colour scheme to create focal points.

5. Toilet Feature Walls

Feature walls are used more commonly in the living room compared to toilets. If you aren’t familiar with what a feature wall is, they’re essentially walls with eye-catching designs and colours that can accentuate different elements. This could be a great opportunity for you to channel your creative side and add a touch of personality to your own space!

Feature walls are usually placed behind the TV console in your living rooms. Depending on your HDB’s toilet design, this can be the wall behind the mirror or the shower and it needn’t be a large space. If you want to keep the feature wall simple, use a different material or colour that contrasts with your overall colour scheme. Striking patterns or shapes can also be incorporated if you want to add layers of complexity.
