We’ve all stayed at that fancy hotel suite and wished it would never end. The reason why a hotel-inspired HDB bedroom design is usually on the top of renovation wish lists is because hotel rooms are specifically designed to maximise their guests’ comfort and relaxation.
However vacations are temporary (sadly) and a home is forever. But who ever said you couldn’t enjoy the same luxury lifestyle in your HDB flat? Hotel inspired bedrooms are all the hype recently as more homeowners are focusing on elements of “self-care” into their homes.
Read on for our approach towards designing your HDB bedroom into the ultimate private space for you to unwind after a long day’s work.
1. See Things In A Different Light-ing
Hotels often use mood lighting to create the perfect ambiance? In every corner from their grand lobbies to extensive corridors, hotels understand the impact lighting plays in their guests’ experience. Lighting plays an important role in influencing your feelings of comfort and soothe.
Lighting is vital to interior design. Sure, we need it for functional purposes, but its aesthetics are often neglected. While you’re definitely not building a hotel, there are a few takeaways that you can apply to your HDB bedroom design. Ambient and accent lighting like pendant lights, track lights, or cove lights are popular examples of setting the tone.
#1 Pendant Lighting
They are highly versatile in hdb bedroom design as they blend aesthetics with functionality. Placing them directly above your bed creates a nice ambiance for your bedroom and creates a consistent level of light. Or place them above the bedside table to artistically frame your bed while also serving as a reading nightlight.
#2 Accent Lighting
Recessed lights or track lights are in high demand despite not being meant to be your room’s main source of light. They create focal points and draw attention to specific points like a branded bag collection, wall art or just a visual separation of your bedroom. Choose lightings that have directionally adjustable fittings for the widest angles of flexibility.
#3 Task Lighting
If you wfh or your bedroom has ample space for a study desk, task lighting may be more suitable. As the name suggests, task lights are used to complete tasks. The light is direct and intense for focusing on your tasks at hand. In bedroom design, this is particularly useful for your desktop gaming setups.
Regardless of your choice of lighting, we recommend going for warmer tones over cooler ones to produce a soothing and welcoming atmosphere. Warmer tones are also better for your melatonin production, meaning that they’re more sleep-friendly! Think of warm tones like a ‘night mode’ for your room.
2. Wall Decor
Your hdb’s interior design should flow through to your bedroom design. Whether you’re going for a minimalistic or an industrial style, you’ll need to find the complementary colours and textures. You could opt for paint, or play around with your headboards (or lack thereof) to add texture.
There are actually numerous ways to add texture to your walls that don’t necessarily require much effort. Wall art, accessories or portraits are also an opportunity for interesting decor. But avoid overdoing it and keep things on the simpler side.
3. Platform Beds
Did you know that the average person spends a third of their life sleeping? All the more reason why you should pay attention to your bedroom’s design.
Do away with your conventional bed frames and check out platform beds instead.
Many people consider platform beds to be bulky and unattractive. But the truth is, these sleek low-profile frames are perfect for the modern or minimalistic vibes. Platform beds come in various arrangements and styles so there is something for everyone.
A big plus side is their additional functionality. If you’re someone who stores a lot of belongings in the bedroom, you could build-in additional storage into the platform for easy decluttering. There are options that come without unsightly handles for those who prefer their bed not to look like a giant drawer. New platform bed designs are featuring more and more storage capacity and who knows? You may end up saving space on a wardrobe.
4. L-Shaped Wardrobe Corners
The standard formula seen in many HDBs is to build full height wardrobes into the walls in a bid to save some space. Drawing inspiration from hotel rooms, we emulated a cosy walk-in wardrobe experience by using the wardrobe itself as a room divider, separating the master toilet from the rest of the room. This area also doubles as a private changing area or vanity corner with just the right space for a mirror!
5. Silk Sheets Fit For A King
Remember how crisp the bedsheets looked during your last vacation? The entire bed must have felt so inviting you just wanted to dive right in. Better yet, they probably look and feel oh so good – maybe you even slept better.
If you want to recreate that boutique hotel aesthetic, give your bed a new facelift.
Design wise, you can’t go wrong with the classic white bed sheets. If you’re not fond of the uniformity, mix in some colour and patterns with accent pillows or puffy comforters. It’s all down to your personal preferences of your bedroom design.
What we can recommend though, is the choice of material as some may not be ideal in Singapore’s humid weather. Look out for breathable and cooling fabrics like Tencel™ Lyocell, Egyptian Cotton, or Bamboo.
Be warned however, their silky smooth touch may make it harder for you to get out of bed on weekdays!
5. Bedroom Design That Fits You
The final step is to unite all your furniture, fixtures, and fittings under one cohesive theme. Hotel bedroom designs flow seamlessly and your HDB shouldn’t be any different. Important things to note are your floor plan, where your outlets are, and where you’re walking.
Don’t be afraid to go out of your comfort zone and experiment with different textures on your walls and floor. Showcase wall art above your headboard and position some accent lighting accordingly.
Pro tip: position the lighting or nightstands by your bed in a symmetrical fashion for a balanced look (pictured above).
Position your bed and and study desks near electrical outlets to plan ahead for easy and neater cable access.
More importantly, remember to keep your room clutter-free. A cluttered room can hardly achieve that soothing vacation effect that you’ve been trying to seek. Be disciplined in maintaining your table and organising your wardrobe. Developing this habit also goes a long way towards your mental health and quality of rest!
