A Room-by-Room Guide on Modern Industrial Interior Design

Share

For decades, Industrial interior design has been widely known for its use of dark colour palettes with raw & unfinished aesthetics.

Today, modern interpretations of industrial design are often mixed with contemporary aesthetics. For couples who want a modern twist of the ol’ industrial design style, here’s the nitty gritty of applying it into your dream home.

1. Starting With The Basics

Dark Colours & Brown Tones

Industrial-themed homes typically use dark colour palettes such as black, grey, and brown for their surfaces. In modern industrial design, natural lighting helps to balance out the dark colours using large open windows with black metal grilles (pictured above), another staple feature of industrial designs.

Lighting

Lighting fixtures are especially important in modern industrial interior designs. Incandescent and Edison bulbs are a great choice to pair with your choice of modern pendant lights or track lights. These lights enhance the industrial atmosphere with its vintage aesthetics to create a warm & cosy atmosphere.

Combination of Wood and Metal

Metal and wood elements are often seen in industrial-themed homes as it contributes to the raw, rugged & rustic vibes. The metals used are usually black in colour and are commonly applied to light fixtures and cabinetry. Overall, combining these two elements creates a harmonious blend that defines modern industrial design’s unique appeal.

2. Living Room

In the living room, monochromatic colours such as grey could be used for the surfaces, complemented with rustic accents from your carpentry or cabinetry. Exposed wire pipings from your lights can also accentuate the raw unfinished look.

For furniture, we recommend looking for ones with metal and wood accents with neutral and monochromatic tones, as these would perfectly embody the modern industrial look & feel.

If you are looking for something interesting, adding playful chandeliers and pendant lighting fixtures infuse creativity and adds a sense of modernity that breaks through the monotony of traditional industrial designs.

3. Dining Room

If you have limited spaces to work with, a smart way to organise your dining area is to have a kitchen island that serves as both a food prep area and a dining table. Its design and material should complement the rest of your kitchen, depending on your chosen colour palette and if you intend to do light or heavy cooking.

Don’t stop there! A dining area isn’t complete without its chairs. Many modern chairs with black or dark brown tones blend in perfectly with industrial interior designs. Look for ones with black metal legs which makes the matching much easier.

Depending on your preferences, Edison bulbs can hang above your dining table for that classic industrial restaurant vibe, or opt for simple track lights that are more subtle and soothing. For a real showstopper, modern spider chandeliers combined with Edison bulbs create a unique lighting feature in the heart of your home.

4. Kitchen

Modern industrial homes often feature black metal doors and windows to create a sense of openness and to allow plenty of natural light to illuminate the dark interiors of the industrial style. Dark accents in your kitchen are usually complemented with the brown tones of your cabinetry.

Play around with the surfaces and the kitchen appliances. For example, you could opt for wooden laminates for your carpentry and sintered stone for the countertop as these elements contribute to the raw and grainy look.

Handleless drawers and cabinets give your kitchen a clean and modern feel. Complete the look with cement screed flooring which is low-maintenance and durable. However, it can be slippery so avoid it in case you have elders or children at home.

5. Bedroom

The colour palette plays a big part in the bedroom as it can influence moods, add ambiance and lastly affect your state of mind. By opting for a neutral tone with a primary focus on brown adds warmth and cosiness to your space of relaxation. You can simply do so by using wooden laminate for your wardrobe or by incorporating wooden vinyl flooring.

Another easy method is the usage of textiles by choosing light earthy tones such as beige and off white for your bedsheets and curtains to add a touch of modernity.

A open-concept wardrobe is a staple of modern and industrial interior design. The wardrobe pictured above features a unique transparent folding glass door with sleek black frames. The wardrobe exudes sophistication while harmonising with the rustic and exposed elements of the wooden laminate décor.

Industrial interior design is all about having the raw and unfinished aesthetics. However, today’s interpretations of the theme fuse modern & contemporary design elements that do not take away from the original, but instead elevate them to a new level of aesthetics and functionality.

The sky’s the only limit, with proper decision making and a dash of creativity, your ideal industrial interior is not too far away.
